For years cars have been an interest to many individuals, some going to great lengths to preserve older cars and others interested in discovering new technologies. Recently cars representing the two different interests were on display in events held in Cape Girardeau.

The River City Rodders, along with Old Town Cape, hosted the 34th annual River Tales Classic Car Show. The event -- which moved to downtown Cape Girardeau from Capaha Park five years ago -- drew more than 150 vehicles. Most participants were within a 130 mile radius of Cape Girardeau but some came from farther away.

In addition to participants and spectators spending the day enjoying the classic cars on display, the event brought many folks to downtown Cape Girardeau where several merchants were open for business.

The Electric Vehicle Conversion Convention, organized by Cape Girardeau entrepreneur Jack Rickard and former automotive magazine writer and editor Brian Noto, attracted about 145 participants from across the U.S. as well as other countries.

The electric drag racing and autocross competitions, which were free public events, drew about 150 people. And for those simply wanting to take a look at the vehicles, there was a display of about 50 electric cars at Capaha Park.

Both events are already scheduled for next year, the classic car show set for Sept. 16 and the electric car convention Sept. 26 to 30.

We are proud that Cape Girardeau hosted two successful and dynamic car events. Special thanks to the organizers for their efforts and the participants for choosing to come to Cape Girardeau.
