BRINGING BLACK FAMILIES TOGETHER FOR A SUMMER REUNION

If there is one issue that can be found at the heart of so many problems in modern America, it is the deterioration of the American family. Different groups may argue what has brought about this breakdown, but few outside the extreme don't yearn to see a renewal of family values and commitment. Strong, loving families are the most profound source of good -- and health and security -- in any civilization.

In celebration of the family, Cape Girardeau will be host to a truly remarkable event later this summer: the River Heritage Regional Black Family Reunion Celebration. This event, with a mouthful of a name, will be Aug. 12-14 in Arena Park. Under the theme, "Fighting for the Family," the three-day reunion will seek to enhance the historical strengths and traditional values of the black family and its community though workshops, picnics, community and entertainment. The national award-winning gospel group, "Commissioned," which received a 1992 Grammy nomination for best gospel album, will headline at the Show Me Center Aug. 13.

What makes this event rather unique is that the organizers believe it is the first time such an event has been organized outside of the larger cities (Memphis is the model for the reunion).

Paul Garland, co-chairman of the reunion and an employee of the event's major sponsor, Procter and Gamble, expects participants to come from all over Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and the St. Louis area.

This gathering of black families offers Cape Girardeau an opportunity to show off. Already, many local organizations and businesses have stepped to the fore.

According to Garland, organizing the event "has served as a catalyst for government agencies, public sector institutions, corporations, businesses, community-based organizations, and families of all types to work in partnership toward self-help solutions to issues affecting African American families, our communities and businesses."
