When things seem at their worst, people are often at their very best.
Such seems the case with Cape Girardeau Police Officer Dan Niswonger. Since his injuries and subsequent surgeries, there has been a great outpouring from the community -- especially from fellow policemen and firefighters. This genuine concern for Dan and his family has been reassuring.
He was critically injured while working a marathon race on a police motorcycle on April 2. Just days after the accident, more than 100 people donated blood at an emergency drive.
In a letter to the Missourian in early May, Niswonger said, "The outpouring of love and concern shown by the citizens of Cape Girardeau have certainly demonstrated to me why our city is such a wonderful place to live."
On Saturday, more than 40 officers, firefighters and others put a new roof on the Niswonger home. Several local businesses donated supplies. It was a wonderful gesture that certainly lifted the family's spirits.
Those wishing to drop Dan a line can do so by mailing a card or letter to Saint Louis University Hospital, 3635 Vista, room 615, St. Louis, 63110.
Dan Niswonger's recovery will be long term. Last Friday, an infection forced the removal of his right leg and part of the pelvic bone. Now, more than ever, he needs the community's support and prayers.
