Springtime means people are spending more of the day outside, walking trails, biking or spending time in one of Cape Girardeau’s many parks. On Saturday, you have an opportunity to thank the parks and other outdoor spots for all the good times you’ve had there by participating in Cape’s 31st annual Friends of the Parks Day and the Great Cape Clean-Up.
Every year, hundreds of volunteers turn out to help beautify a place of their choosing. Some groups and individuals choose to work in their own backyard or around their business. Others help at schools.
The city also makes projects available at sites around town. This year’s tasks will be completed in downtown Cape, Capaha Park, Indian Park, Kiwanis Park, May Greene Garden, Dennis Scivally Park, Cape Rock Park, Cape LaCroix Creek and the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course, among others, according to the city’s blog. Projects to be completed include mulching, planting trees and flowers, picking up trash and raking.
Everyone should always seek to leave the parks as nice as or better than they found them year-round. However, it’s nice to have one day dedicated to park-goers in the city coming together to give Cape’s outdoor areas a good spring cleaning.
The effort begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Capaha Park. A lunch of hot dogs, chips and soda will be provided by Schnucks.
If you would like to register for Friends of the Parks Day, call the Parks and Recreation Department at (573) 339-6340.
