In just eight years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri has made a big impact on Cape Girardeau. Some of those achievements received special recognition last week.

The Cape Girardeau School District was presented the President's Award, the organization's top national award. It was the first time the award had ever been given to a school district. The district was recognized for its ABC Education Initiative, a program tracking the attendance, behavior and classroom success of Big Brothers Big Sisters participants.

Southeast Missouri State University was given the Partner Award for its involvement in the ABC Education Initiative.

During a special awards ceremony, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau announced that Big Brothers Big Sisters Amachi Missouri is the official charity of the Tour of Missouri, a bike race that draws international competitors. The Amachi component of Big Brothers Big Sisters focuses on children who have mothers or fathers in prison.

In addition to the awards, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri also is the top affiliate in making long-lasting matches between youths and mentors. That and the special awards are achievements to be proud of.
