There is a distinct hum of activity to be heard these days. It comes from youngsters walking through school doors as students for the first time in their lives. It comes from high school students driving to public and parochial high schools throughout the area. It comes from students trying out the new community college experiment, the Cape Girardeau Partnership for Higher Education, at the Career and Technology Center. It comes from Southeast Missouri State University students returning to campus for the fall semester.
The hum became noticeably louder last week when Southeast students began moving into campus housing. Before the sun came up Thursday, students and their parents were being greeted by student volunteers cheerfully helping carry belongings to dorm rooms. This organized effort greatly reduces congestion and confusion and gives the students a great start on their college careers.
It is interesting to note that this is the first year in recent memory that there hasn't been a disruptive street project underway during move-in day at the university. Finding your way around campus was easier.
Now that we're back into the familiar routine of school days, be cautious when you're driving. Watch out for our students.
