To the editor:

Art is a medium to explore ideas, platforms, opinions and beliefs. It allows us to be exposed to ideas other than our own and then understand and evaluate them. If we are only exposed to ideas or beliefs we already hold, there would be no advancement. Being exposed to a belief or idea we do not agree with does not mean we must or will change our position. The subject matter in the "offensive" performances in question are issues in our world. Limiting the artistic exploration of such issues show far more fear of the subject matter than concern of offending anyone.

Supporting local artists is a community responsibility. We chose to attend the second annual Fall Cabaret at Cup 'N' Cork instead of "Sweeney Todd." It was an absolutely entertaining and delightful fundraiser showcasing some of the University Players at Southeast Missouri State University. It is important to support our local artists no matter what the venue. The performances of the Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts should not be limited to what is perceived safe or inoffensive. It should be a broad base of ideas and beliefs.

All season ticket holders should be free to return any ticket for a performance they do not wish to attend. There should not be limits place on the Theatre and Dance Department's choice of productions. That, in our opinion, is a form of censorship. After all, it is your right to choose what to attend, and it should be the department's right to choose what it explores.
