The death of Cape Girardeau native Derek Hale at the hands of police in Wilmington, Del., has devastated his family and raised serious questions for his many acquaintances and relatives.
The unarmed Hale, who served in Iraq with the U.S. Marines and had been living Virginia, was stunned by Tasers and then fatally shot earlier this month. Eyewitnesses said the use of stun guns and weapons was unnecessary.
It is an unfortunate circumstance that Hale's wife is planning to sue the Wilmington police, but that may well be the only way to make sure a thorough investigation is completed. If police officers acted inappropriately, action should be taken as soon as possible.
But for those who knew and loved Hale, perhaps the biggest need right now is for answers. Let's hope authorities in Wilmington swiftly conclude their inquiry and share the results with the public.
