Pushing high school students to take tough classes, including Advanced Placement courses, has paid off for Central High School in Cape Girardeau, which has been recognized by the ACT Education Division for its academic rigor in math and science. Central was one of six Missouri schools to be recognized, and one of 382 schools nationwide.

ACT, a national testing service, honors schools whose students score higher than average on its math and science exams. Dr. Mike Cowan, Central's principal, is rightfully proud of the school and its students. Cowan said students who take tougher courses are better prepared to succeed in college. He said he pushes students to take challenging classes.

Central continues to add Advanced Placement courses in its curriculum. Students who take AP courses can receive college credit if they score high enough on national tests.

Congratulations to the students, teachers and administrators who are placing a high premium on academic excellence at Central High School.
