A PEP RALLY FOR LEARNING

Cape Girardeau's Central High School had a first recently. It was a pep rally -- for academic achievement. Planned by the school's Renaissance Steering Committee, about half the student body was cheered as honors were presented for good grades, academic improvement and participation in activities such as the band.

The students' achievement was matched by recognition for those who helped make it possible: the teachers. One of these special mentors was singled out to receive the first-ever Distinguished Service Award: Pat Johnson.

The Renaissance program is new to the high school this year. Its aim is to promote the ideals of scholarship and learning in an atmosphere that recognizes the value of achievement and regular participation in the school process.

There was plenty to cheer at the academic pep rally -- most of all the knowledge that many students place a high priority on taking advantage of what the school has to offer rather than looking for ways to beat the system.
