A day for arts

With a weather forecast of sunny and temperatures in the 80s, everything looks good for Saturday's arts events at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau.

The full day features the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's ArtsCape Community Arts Festival and the Street Painting Festival organized by Craig Thomas, owner of the Black Door Gallery downtown.

On tap are a children's activity center, vendors of arts and crafts, musical entertainment and street painting, which involves creating temporary art on sidewalks using pastel chalks.

The Street Painting Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost to participants is $15 each and includes a box of pastels and pizza.

ArtsCape is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

About 30 vendors are expected, selling blown glass, pottery, jewelry and other crafts. A glassblower and blacksmith will be on hand to demonstrate their crafts.

It takes a lot of preparation and work to pull off all-day events like these, and everyone involved in ArtsCape and the Street Painting Festival deserves a big thank you from the community, especially those who spend some time Saturday at Capaha Park.

Cape Girardeau's growing reputation in the arts will get a big boost from these events.
