William Raymond "Bill" Whiteside, 78, of Jackson passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at his home. Bill was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., to Alvis and Hazel Brown Whiteside. He and Mary Schafer were married April 18, 1969. During his early years, Bill was a resident of Ste. Genevieve. He and Mary later resided in the communities of Jackson and Perryville, Mo., settling back in Jackson in 2006...

William Raymond "Bill" Whiteside, 78, of Jackson passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at his home.

Bill was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., to Alvis and Hazel Brown Whiteside. He and Mary Schafer were married April 18, 1969.

During his early years, Bill was a resident of Ste. Genevieve. He and Mary later resided in the communities of Jackson and Perryville, Mo., settling back in Jackson in 2006.

Bill worked many years for General Motors Corp. in St. Louis, retiring in 1987 and accepting a position as a security officer at Lake Perry, Mo., near Perryville.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and a member of Perryville Elks Lodge 2701. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing. Loving survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary, of Jackson; four children, Debra (Wade) Lipsey of Oak Ridge, Carla (Matthew) Whetsel of Montgomery, Ala., Martin Whiteside of Sedgewickville, Mo., Bill (Susan) Whiteside Jr. of Jackson; a sister, Lillian Martin of Ste. Genevieve; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are five sisters-in-law, Geraldine Whiteside of Ste. Genevieve, Joan (Chuck) Mudge of Perryville, Rose (Rodney) Roshek of Wright City, Mo., Judy (Brad) Proffer of Cameron, Mo., and Susan (Larry) Bruhl of Jackson; three brothers-in-law, Donald Schafer of Jonesboro, Ga., Richard (Donna) Schafer of Marble Hill, Mo., and Frank (Lisa) Schafer of Perryville; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Nelson; and three brothers, Eugene, Robert and Frank Whiteside.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. Members of Perryville Elks Lodge 2701 will honor Bill with a remembrance service at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Stan Hargis officiating.

Interment will follow in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Southeast Hospice.
