William Fred Stone, 81, of Bonne Terre, Mo., formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. He had been in ill health for some time.

He was born April 1, 1920, in St. Louis, son of George E. and Rose A. Youngman Stone.

He graduated from Doniphan High School in Doniphan, Mo., in 1939.

He worked 42 years at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co., which became Lone Star Industries. He started in 1940 as a laboratory technician and became plant manager in 1965. In 1970, he assumed the position of manager of quality, which he held until his retirement.

Mr. Stone was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1941. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 and joined the National Guard and Army Reserve. He retired from the military in 1965 as a lieutenant colonel.

He was a member of Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, Cape Rotary Club, Harold O. Grauel Masonic Lodge 672, Scottish Rite, Moolah Shrine Temple, Eastern Star Chapter 167, Shrine Clown Unit, Legion of Honor, Cape Shrine Club, American Legion, Reserve Officers Association, Cape Girardeau Country Club, IOOF Lodge 5 in St. Louis, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association and Salem Methodist Church in Ballwin, Mo.

Survivors include a son, William Stone Jr. of Josephville, Mo.; a daughter, Barbara Ann Doughty of Bonne Terre; a sister, Helene O'Daniels of Pikesville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. John Hoos officiating. Burial will be at 1:45 p.m. today in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis with military rites by Missouri Honor Guard.
