William Roscoe "Scoe" Newbern of Cape Girardeau departed life at Southeast Missouri Hospital Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the age of 71. He resided at The Lutheran Home, 2825 Bloomfield Road. William Roscoe "Scoe" Newbern of Cape Girardeau departed life at Southeast Missouri Hospital Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the age of 71. He resided at The Lutheran Home, 2825 Bloomfield Road.

He was born March 7, 1926, in Ripley, Tenn., the son of Q.T. and Gustee Newbern. He married Mintry V. Sullivan April 19, 1946, in Corinth, Miss.

He was a member of New Bethel M.B. Church. He worked many years at Central Packing Company and later retired from West Lake Quarry. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed helping with the cooking at the church.

Left to mourn him is his wife, Mintry, of Cape Girardeau. Also surviving are eight sons: William T. (Ethel) and Dwight Newbern of Decatur, Ill.; James T. Newbern of Belleville, Ill.; Earl Thomas Reed of Dayton, Ohio; William Roscoe Newbern Jr., Robert L. (Trish) Newbern, and Patrick (Tamara) Buck, all of Cape Girardeau; and Andre Newbern of Columbia.

Also surviving are three daughters: Jeanette (Alfred) Hawkins of Decatur, Ill.; Lilly Gilwater of Cape Girardeau; and Mable (Charlie) Kent of Indianapolis, Ind.

Other survivors include his goddaughter, Brenda Colon of Cape Girardeau; 29 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, an adoped son and twin son and daughter.

Friends may call at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Chapel Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will begin at noon Saturday at New Bethel M.B. Church, the Rev. Johnny Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park cemetery.
