William J. Kaempfer, 79, of Aledo, Ill., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, Ill.
He was born July 7, 1921, in Cape Girardeau, son of Emil and Grace Varner Kaempfer. He and Lee Magill were married in Cape Girardeau.
Kaempfer was a graduate of Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University.
He was manager of JCPenney in West Plains, Mo., and then moved to Aledo where he managed the former JCPenney store until retiring in 1976. He was then manager of New Boston Branch of Joy State Bank, retiring in 1992.
Kaempfer was a member and former president of Aledo Exchange Club, board member of Mercer Carnegie Library, member of Aledo United Methodist Church and Mercer County VFW Post 1571 in Aledo.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Karen Weinstein of Bettendorf, Iowa; a son, Paul Kaempfer of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Robert Kaempfer of Shawano, Wis.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Aledo United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Crede officiating. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
