ADVANCE, Mo. -- Wilburn Maurice Proffer of Advance passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at the age of 89. He was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Hahn, Missouri, the son of Maurice Clifton and Ruth Eaker Proffer. Wilburn retired from McDonnell Douglas Corp. in 1985. He was one of the founding members of West Side General Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir director. Wilburn also sang in a quartet...

ADVANCE, Mo. -- Wilburn Maurice Proffer of Advance passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at the age of 89.

He was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Hahn, Missouri, the son of Maurice Clifton and Ruth Eaker Proffer.

Wilburn retired from McDonnell Douglas Corp. in 1985. He was one of the founding members of West Side General Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir director. Wilburn also sang in a quartet.

Several years after retirement, Wilburn and his first wife, Charlotte, moved to Jackson, where they joined Connection Point Church, and he sang in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Proffer; children, Linda (Tom) Simpson, Roger Proffer and David Proffer; stepson, Anthony (Deb) Proffer; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Opal (Webster) Eaker and Ada Proffer; and stepbrother, Charles Rhodes.

Wilburn was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Proffer; father, Maurice Proffer; mother, Ruth Rhodes; stepfather, Milas Rhodes; brothers, Clifton, Odis and Everett Proffer, and Luther and Buford Rhodes; and sisters, Ruby Umfleet and Kathleen Osborne.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chris Vaught officiating. Burial will follow at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
