SCOTT CITY -- Wendell Lee "Wendy" Smith Hamil, 81, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 30. Her loving husband, Robert Vaden Hamil, 89, of Scott City, followed just one day after on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
Mrs. Hamil was born July 10, 1939, in Portageville, Missouri, to the late Jesse Smith and Elzadia Burton Smith Rice. Wendy dedicated herself by working as the supervisor for children's services. After 30 years, she retired from the Missouri Department of Social Services in 1999.
Mr. Hamil was born Sept. 5, 1931, in Puxico, Missouri, to the late Harmon Vaden Hamil and Vera Mae Williamson. Bob worked as an Engineer for Cotton Belt Railroad and retired after 36 years of dedicated service.
Wendy loved to dance and loved music. Her organizational skills and keeping the Hamil home was next to perfect.
Bob loved working in his small garden and kept his lawn pristine. He could fix just about anything that he put his mind to.
After they were married on March 1, 1996, they loved to travel and enjoyed just being with each other. On most Friday nights you could find them playing games with a close circle of friends as they loved having fun in good company. As most could testify, they have never been known to argue or fight. Their relationship was something most admired, like out of a movie or fiction book.
In fact, their love was contagious to those close to them.
Most neighbors and friends didn't hesitate to claim and love them as family.
For the children and grandchildren left behind, their devotion, silliness and fun-loving spirit will be missed tremendously. Grandma's enduring love, and "grandpa hugs" will be memories never to be forgotten.
They were long time members of Cape Bible Chapel and devoted themselves to helping others less fortunate and in need.
All who knew them now know they are finally together because Mr. Hamil was committed to NEVER leaving Mrs. Hamil's side. After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Jesus decided enough was enough and took Wendy home. The very next day it was realized that this love story was not over, but "to be continued" in heaven. Mr. Hamil's commitment again rang true even to the very end.
Not in life, or death, could they be parted. This is yet another example of God's Amazing Grace!
Mrs. Hamil was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Garry Dwayne Smith, and sister-law-in (Margaret).
Mr. Hamil was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Bonita Raney, 74, daughter, Tempa Greene, 54, Grandson, Travis Hamil, 20, as well as, his first bride, Gloria "Joyce" Skinner, 60, after 42 years of marriage, which tragically ended on Feb. 13, 1994.
