Walter W. Schmidt, 91, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Cape Girardeau, son of Edward A. and Lillian P. McGinnis Schmidt. He and Rita I. Braun were married June 11, 1947, at St. Mary's Cathedral.

Schmidt was employed at L.A. Tucker Truck Lines from 1939 to 1943, 1946 through 1950, and from 1960 through 1968. He farmed from 1951 to 1957. Schmidt moved to Tamms, Ill., in 1969 and began working at the U.S. post office there in 1979 as a substitute carrier. From 1985 through September 1997 he was a rural carrier in Pulaski County, Ill.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; three sisters, Ruth Bianchi, Louise Bock and Mary Helen Melton, all of Sun City West, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time Monday at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. Saviour Nundwe officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Delta Team at the chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
