Walter Roth, 90, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Cape Girardeau, son of Martin and Magdalena Walter Roth. He and Louise Bender were married April 14, 1950, in Cape Girardeau.

Walter graduated from Central High School, received A.B. and B.S. degrees from Southeast Missouri State University, and master of science from the University of Iowa. He did additional studies at the University of Iowa, New Mexico University at Las Cruces, and the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

He was an actuary with The Equitable in New York City until World War II. He was a math professor at Southeast University 28 years. Walter was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, member of Trinity Men's Club, Copper Dome Society, American Legion Post 63, and Disabled American Veterans.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Martin B. and Betty Roth of Cape Girardeau; a grandson, Christopher Martin Roth; and two stepgrandsons, Brian and Kevin Pingel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Walter Wilder Roth; and a brother, Martin L. Roth.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cape County Memorial Park. The Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School Building Fund or Southeast Hospice.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
