STE. GENEVIEVE -- Virginia Ann Wehmeyer, 68, of Ste. Genevieve died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Integrated Health Services of St. Louis.

She was born June 5, 1930, daughter of Bernard and Hettie Self Layton of St. Marys.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wadsworth "Washie" Wehmeyer, and a son.

She was instrumental in tourism in Ste. Genevieve during the 1980s, having served as the manager of the Tourist Information Center from 1979 to 1987. She was also responsible for bringing the Shriner's Parade and Horse Show to Ste. Genevieve in the mid-1980s. She was chosen Queen of the King's Ball and was selected the Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of the Year in 1985 during the 250th celebration. She was also a member of the Foundation for Restoration and the River Heritage Association.

She is survived by four sons, James Wehmeyer of Macks Creek, William and Joseph Wehmeyer, both of Ste. Genevieve, Thomas Wehmeyer of Collinsville, Ill.; a daughter, Marguerite Palmer of Zell; a brother, Louis Layton of St. Marys; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A son, three brothers and sister preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Basler Funeral Home in Ste. Genevieve.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Ste. Genevieve. Burial will follow at Valle Spring Cemetery.
