Virginia Swilley, 90, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Lutheran Home.
She was born April 21, 1911, in Memphis, Tenn., daughter of P.B. and Alma Juden Barnes. She and A.A. Swilley were married in October 1947. He preceded her in death.
Swilley was reared in Portageville, Mo. She was a graduate of Portageville High School, attended Southeast Missouri State University, and was a graduate of Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, Tenn.
She was a teacher with Portageville Public Schools. She was a member of Portageville United Methodist Church most of her life and held offices in its United Methodist Women.
Swilley was a charter member of Chapter GU of PEO Sisterhood and member of Portageville Garden Club, and had been a volunteer with American Red Cross and Pemiscot Memorial Hospital at Hayti, Mo.
She moved to Cape Girardeau in 1996 and became a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Chapter BI of PEO.
Survivors include a nephew, Dr. James Leslie of Roseburg, Ore.; and two nieces, Jane Wrather of Cape Girardeau and Jill Austin of Lubbock, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a sister.
Friends may call at DeLisle Funeral Home in Portageville from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Portageville. The Revs. Ed Rhodes and Clayton Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Portageville Cemetery.
