Funeral Mass for Virginia M. Merritt of Rockford, Ill., was held Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Hanrahan officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Winnebago, Ill.

Honquest Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Merritt, 69, died Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, in Rockford Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 24, 1927, in Chicago, daughter of George and Helen Kennedy Winkleman. She and Joseph C. Merritt were married Oct. 15, 1949, in Chicago.

Merritt moved to Rockford six years ago from Oak Lawn, Ill.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Mark Merritt of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Hope LoDestro of Rockford; two brothers, Joseph Winkleman of Orland Park, Ill., James Winkleman of Oak Lawn; a sister, Patricia Ballard of Naperville, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
