Virginia Beadles

Virginia V. Beadles, 89, of Cairo, Ill., died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Virginia was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Jackson, the daughter of Clyde and Julia Vandivort.

Her family moved to Cape Girardeau a short time after her birth and she spent her earlier years there. Virginia attended the local schools and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University.

She taught high school in Marquand, Mo., and substituted in the Cairo schools as needed. On May 5, 1936, Virginia and Thomas H. Beadles of Cairo were married at the Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Patricia B. Bangert of Cape Girardeau, Gail Hercules of Oxford, Miss.; a son, John A. Beadles of Atlanta; their spouses; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Julia Clement of Webster Groves, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother and by three brothers and two sisters.

Virginia and her husband, Tom, spent the first seven years of their married life in Decatur, Ill. Two of their children were born there. The couple moved to Cairo, where the youngest daughter was born, and remained there for a number of years. The next move was to Naperville, Ill., where they lived for 10 years before retiring to Cairo.

Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cairo, the Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau, the Clio Society at Southeast Missouri Teachers College, the Copper Dome of Southeast Missouri State University, the Cairo Women's Club, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Kappa Delta Chi, as well as other organizations.

Virginia and her husband, and sometimes with other family members, traveled extensively, one time taking a trip around the northern hemisphere, starting out from Chicago to the Hawaiian Islands and then on to Japan and continuing all the way around back to Chicago.

Graveside services will be held at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau at 3 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Kelly Cox of Cairo officiating. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Cairo at a later date.
