DEXTER -- Virgie Smith, 87, of Dexter died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 18, 1911, at Essex, daughter of William and Mary Warren Payne. She and Robert H. Smith were married May 25, 1932. He died July 13, 1987...

DEXTER -- Virgie Smith, 87, of Dexter died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 18, 1911, at Essex, daughter of William and Mary Warren Payne. She and Robert H. Smith were married May 25, 1932. He died July 13, 1987.

Smith lived in the Essex area until moving to Dexter in 1953. She was a member of New Bethel General Baptist Church near Dexter.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye Barnett of Dexter; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Friends may call at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marion Gipson officiating. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery near Essex.
