Vin L. Owens, 74, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 11, 1934, in Jackson, son of Isac "Ike" and Erma Sides Owens. He and Judy K. King were married Oct. 30, 1965.
Owens attended school in Jackson.
He was a private first class in the U.S. Army from Aug. 22, 1952, to July 15, 1954, serving almost 18 months in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation.
Owens was a lifelong commercial painter with Local 1292 in Cape Girardeau. He was a member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau and was formerly a Little League baseball coach in McClure, Ill.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Owens of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Vicky L. Owens of Cape Girardeau, Kathy Johnson of California; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son.
A private service was held Wednesday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, with the Rev. Jim Matthews officiating. Burial was in Russell Heights Cemetery with military rites presented by VFW Post 3838 and full military honors by Delta Team of Cape Girardeau.
