THEBES, Ill. -- Funeral service for Vernon Garnett McHughs, Thebes Route 1, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Rev. David Pringle will officiate, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thebes.
Friends may call at the chapel after 6 p.m. today.
McHughs, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at his home.
He was born Nov. 20, 1922, at Thebes, son of John and Ollie Watkins McHughs. He and Dixie Fedderly were married 49 years.
McHughs was a self-employed welder. He was a member of Alexander County Free Will Baptist Church and Boilermakers and Ironworkers.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, William, Larry and Vernon McHughs of Thebes, Charles McHughs of Beaver Dam, Wis., Steven McHughs of East Cape Girardeau; five daughters, Evelyn McHughs of Gypsum, Colo., Deborah McHughs and Emily Spray of Thebes, Rebecca Carver of McClure, Mary Smith of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Pauline Tucker of Thebes; a brother, Robert McHughs of Medora; 25 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, four brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
