SIKESTON -- Verneal McGill, 81, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Sikeston, died Sunday, Oct. 12 at Baylor Hospital in Garland.
She was born on March 20, 1916, in Vanduser, daughter of Andrew Houston and Lulu Ethel Vanduser Phillips.
She married William Howard McGill on Dec. 18, 1933 in Charleston. He preceded her in death April 14, 1965.
She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church in Sikeston and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas, where she was active in the "Silver Tones" senior adult choir. She had played basketball and was on the track team at Matthews High School. She competed seven years in the Senior Olympics, earning several gold and silver medals in basketball and softball events.
She is survived by three sons, Maurice McGill and Stan McGill, both of Garland, and Phillip McGill of Paducah, Ky.; a daughter, Hester Doyle of Oklahoma City, Okla; a sister, Geneva Pearcy of Sulphur Springs; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today in Garland, Texas. Visitation also will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel with Rev. Jim Matthews officiating.
Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.
