Vera B. Koen, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Jasper, Mo., to Cliffard F. and Clara Thomas Baker.

She and Jesse A. Koen were married Nov. 26, 1947, in Jasper. He preceded her in death in 1991.

She was a very active member of Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau and its prayer shawl ministry, Loyal Aiders Sunday school class, Church Women United, was past Treasurer of the church, was a member of Nurturing Outreach and Witness, Administrative Council, United Methodist Women, Day Circle and was past bereavement dinner chairwoman.

Vera worked at Bunny Bread more than 30 years as the bookkeeper and after retirement she volunteered more than 10,000 hours at Saint Francis Medical Center since 1991. In 2007 she was named Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer of the year and had been a past vice president of Saint Francis Auxiliary. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of AARP, BPW, SOS Heartland Rubies (Red Hat Society) and volunteered at the Salvation Army.

Survivors include daughters Susan C. Koen of Cape Girardeau and Sharon K. (Danny) Scholl of Jackson; son Jim Koen of St. Peters, Mo.; sister June Parsons Dennis of Carthage, Mo.; grandchildren Carman Scholl and Katie Scholl; and great-grandchild Lucy Grace Scholl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Dean Baker.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bryan Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in Hobbs Chapel Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Maple United Methodist Church Building Fund.
