Velma Marie Lizenbee Jones Allen, 90, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at her daughter's home in Millersville.
She was born in Parma, Missouri, on April 21, 1925, to the late Fred Lizenbee and Ella Hoss Lizenbee. She was married to James Jones until his death in 1977 and remarried to Milford Allen in 1986 until his death in 2005.
Velma was a very loving lady who had a contagious smile that showed she loved people and life. She worked in the public most of her life because she enjoyed being around people.
After moving to Dyersburg in 2007, she immediately started volunteering as a pink lady at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center, earning her 1,000-hour pen.
Velma enjoyed being with her family, especially all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very active in her church and loved the social circle at St. Joseph's Manor, where she lived for the past five years. Every Thursday morning, she would be at the activity center, playing bingo and fellowshipping with friends.
She is survived by her son, Jimmie (Kathy) Jones of Portageville, Missouri; two daughters, Laurel (Jerry) Ward of Millersville and Charlotte (Loren) Stephens of Dyersburg; one brother, Robert (Natalie) Lizenbe; two sisters, Helen (F.L.) Robinson and Betty Currin, both of Dexter, Missouri; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Jones; her second husband, Milford Allen; her son, Dennis Jones; two grandchildren, Loren Jr. and Tommy Stephens; three brothers, Earl Lizenbee, Clay Lizenbee and Lonzo Lizenbee; and three sisters, Beatrice Donica, Mary Hull and Loretta Quick.
There is a hole in our heart in the place she used to fill.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Allen will be at noon Wednesday in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home in Dyersburg, conducted by Rev. Loren Stephens. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden, Missouri.
The family requests memorials be directed to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
