OMAHA, Neb. -- Thomas Schmidt passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, in Omaha. He was born March 22, 1944, the son of John and Mary Schmidt.

Tom started working as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service while he was still in college. He graduated from college and lived with Kay, his wife, and two children in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

Tom received his first promotion to supervisor at the bulk mail center in Des Moines, Iowa. Two years later, he was promoted to postmaster of Hanlontown, Iowa, and served there for eight years. Tom was then promoted to postmaster in Lemon, South Dakota; Officer in Charge at Rapid City, South Dakota, and finally retired as postmaster in Advance, Missouri.

Upon his retirement, he became active in the local Baptist church, volunteering for area youth, serving as an alderman, school board member and church secretary. Tom served his communities in the Fraternal Order of the Elks, Jaycees, Fraternal Order of the Masons, Gideons, prison ministry, Baptist Disaster Response and as a missionary in Romania.

Tom was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Reuben, John, David, Don, Harvey and Georgie Schmidt; two sisters, Martha Brammer and Lidia Zimmerman; other family members, Gerry and Russell Koan, Kenneth Larson, Karla Kuyper and Alex Larson.

He is survived by wife, Kay; son, Tom; daughter, Tina; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Rejoice! Lutheran Church, 2556 S. 138th St. in Omaha.

A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the memorial fund at Foundation One Bank, 4141 N. 156th St., Suite 101, Omaha, NE 68116; 402-502-5558.

A second visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. July 24 at First Baptist Church, 408 N. Oak St. in Advance.

It will be followed at 11 a.m. by a memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the memorial fund at Southern Bank, 310 Ruth Street, Advance, MO 63730; 573-722-5599.
