CHARLESTON -- Thena "Rachel" Banks, 89, of Nevada, Iowa, formerly of Charleston, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, at Nevada. She was born May 29, 1907, in the Burr community in Ripley County, daughter of Roshier Cursean and Sarah Elizabeth Smelser Cates. CHARLESTON -- Thena "Rachel" Banks, 89, of Nevada, Iowa, formerly of Charleston, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, at Nevada.

She was born May 29, 1907, in the Burr community in Ripley County, daughter of Roshier Cursean and Sarah Elizabeth Smelser Cates. On Nov. 23, 1923, she married Luther Elmer Banks, who died Nov. 8, 1949.

After leaving Charleston, Banks lived in California for 28 years, moving to Iowa in 1993. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Iva Jane Montgomery of Bridgeton and Judy Yvonne Williams of Nevada, Iowa; two sisters, Bertha Dove Sisk of Charleston and Sarah Carner of Doniphan; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sons and one grandson.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Ron Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
