Stephen Sayles Williams — affectionately known as "Steve" — 79, a resident of Charleston, passed away suddenly Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.

The son of Charles and Dorothy Lewis Williams, he made his grand entrance into this world June 27, 1944, in Marshall.

Steve grew up in Marshall and began his education there. Upon graduating from Missouri Valley College in Marshall in 1966, he went on to serve his country honorably in the U.S. Army.

He retired from the City of Cape Girardeau in 2021 after more than 30 years of exceptional service. Steve continued to be a blessing to many families who rented his properties.

A member of Harmony Lodge No. 40 F. and A.M. of Cape Girardeau and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Steve was a man of faith and integrity and a great leader. Most of all, he cherished his roles as a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor and friend.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Williams Funeral Chapel in Charleston.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour of 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston. Officiating the service will be Bishop Paul Jones.

Interment, with full military honors, will be Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
