ORAN -- Funeral for Alfred E. "Soup" Smith of Oran will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. The Rev. Ed Carter will officiate. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery at Scott City.
Friends may call at the chapel after 4 p.m. today.
Smith, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 27, 1928, in Prescott, Wis., son of James Charles and Dora Darlene Dixon Smith. He married Frankie Marie Summers, who died May 15, 1991.
Smith had been a riverboat captain and pilot with Midwest Towing and Cargo Carriers. He was a former member of Scott City VFW Post 6407. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a daughter, Javada Vogelsang of Oran; three stepdaughters, Sharon Dennis, Mechell Cornish and Leta Smith, all of Fort Worth, Texas.
Also surviving are four brothers, Melvin "Mac" Smith of Scott City, Danny Smith of Kelso, John Smith of St. Louis, David Smith of Sikeston; six sisters, Audrey Matthews of Lincoln, Ill., Imogene Hanger of Stephentown, N.Y., Barbara Houck of Benton, Kathleen Woolridge of Jonesboro, Ill., Ann Leonard of Anaheim, Calif., Sharon Raines of Scott City; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
