NEW HAMBURG -- Funeral mass for Sister Pancratia Schmitt of Red Bud, Ill., was held Monday at Provincial House Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Joyce officiating. Burial was in the Convent Cemetery.
Schmitt, 78, died Friday, Nov. 11, 1994, at her home.
Grace Marie Schmitt was born July 2, 1916, in New Hamburg, daughter of Leonard and Louise Mary Ziegler Schmitt.
She professed her first vows as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ July 2, 1934, and began her teaching career in 1936.
Schmitt received bachelor and master degrees from St. Louis University, and studied German in Europe.
After teaching at the former St. Teresa Academy in East St. Louis, Ill., and doing some religious education work, she taught German language and dance at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville, Ill., for 21 years.
Schmitt's dance troupe performed in Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. They also made several tours of Europe.
After leaving Althoff, Schmitt had been a receptionist at National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville since 1989.
Survivors include two sisters, Sister Norbert Schmitt of Ruma, Ill., Ethel Iannuzi of Woodbridge, Conn., and a brother, Jerome Schmitt of Cottage Hills, Ill.
