Sister Mary Julice Nowland, 93, principal at Notre Dame High School from 1952-58, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis.
Born in St. Louis, she entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1922 and professed her final vows in 1931. She received a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1934, and a master of arts degree in history in 1940, both from St. Louis University.
A former educator, administrator, librarian and archivist, she was an elementary teacher 30 years at schools in Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana and Mississippi.
She was the first principal at the current Notre Dame High School building, which opened in 1954.
Nowland was an administrator 14 years in St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, and in New Orleans. She served as librarian 13 years at Rosati Kain High School in St. Louis, and as archivist 10 years for the School Sisters of Notre Dame St. Louis Province.
She retired to Villa Gesu Retirement Center in North St. Louis County in 1988 and moved to Fairfield Manor nursing home in 1997.
Survivors include two nieces.
Friends may call at School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse in Lemay from 4-8 p.m. today, and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 tonight.
Funeral Mass will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame Motherhouse Cemetery.
