Newman, 72, died Sunday, May 5, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 17, 1923, at Kennett, son of Silas H. and Maude Newman Sr. He and Deloris Duke were married Aug. 8, 1986, at Fredericktown.

Newman owned and operated a service station in Franklin, Ind., 18 years. He later was a truck driver for Sam Tanksley. He was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Indiana, American Legion Post 389 in Chaffee, Disabled American Veterans, and VFW Post 3838.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and also served in the U.S. Marines. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Darrell Newman of Greenwood, Ind.; three daughters, Susan Blevins of New Whiteland, Ind., Mary White of Greenwood, Ind., Carol Reickson of Missouri; two stepdaughters, Lynn Fehr of Cape Girardeau, Denice Christy of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Jo Henfling of Kennett; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three half brothers and a half sister.
