Ules Sherman Woods, 88, of Burfordville passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born June 19, 1925, son of John and Mabel Hyde Woods. He married Gladys Modglin on Aug. 15, 1946.

Sherman was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in Jackson. He was employed many years at Atlas Plastics/Resin Exchange in Cape Girardeau, where he greatly assisted in their expansions in California, Kansas and Minnesota. He retired in 1986. In 2002 he was awarded his honorary high school diploma via Operation Recognition. This was a program that awarded high school diplomas to individuals who entered U.S. military service rather than complete their high school education.

He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II aboard the USS Shangri-La.

Loving survivors include his wife, Gladys Woods of Burfordville; three sons, Larry (Carol) and Mike (Nancy) Woods of Jackson and Andy (Kim) Woods of Cape Girardeau; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Steve Sundstrom officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery at Chaffee, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
