ZALMA, Mo. -- Rulen Rufus "Sam" Spies, 89, of Zalma, formerly of Scott City, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 25, 1911, in Cape Girardeau, son of George John and Martha Eliza Thacker Spies. He and Reva Marie Pruitt were married Aug. 31, 1931, at Benton, Mo. She died Jan. 23, 1971. He and Dorothy Bowman were married June 29, 1973, near Houston, Texas.
Spies was a self-employed farmer. He moved to Zalma in 1974 from Scott City.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Paul R. and Ray Spies of Cape Girardeau, Rulen Spies of Lowndes, Mo.; three daughters, Clara Westrich and Fimble Enderle of Chaffee, Mo., Virginia Ledford of Pensacola, Fla.; 30 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 12 stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers, and four sisters.
Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City from 4-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. Rick Crump officiating. Burial will be in Lightner Memorial Cemetery at Scott City.
