MOUNDS, Ill. -- Sam Moses, 85, of Mounds died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Southgate Health and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis, Ill.
He was born Aug. 11, 1924, in Mounds, son of the late George and Mary Hamaway Moses. He was married to Julia Hope Wilbourn.
Moses was a retired farmer and landowner. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mound City, Ill., Cairo Elks Lodge 651, Pulaski County Memorial VFW Post 8891 in Mounds and Cairo Knights of Columbus.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Moses Northington; a son, David Moses; a sister, Cassie Caffery; and three brothers, Lufkin Moses, Dr. Ed Moses and James B. Moses.
Moses is survived by his wife, Julia Hope Moses of Mounds; two daughters, Cecila Ann and husband Roger Devore of Lebanon, Ill., Carol and husband John Stout of Mounds; two sons, James M. and wife Chong Moses of Herrin, Ill., Billy and wife Janet Moses of Mounds; a sister, Nida Bell of Mounds; a brother, John Moses of Mounds; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Barkett Funeral home in Mounds. The rosary will be recited at 7.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mound City, with Monsignor Bill McGhee as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Mounds, with military honors offered by area veterans organizations and the United States Army.
At the request of the family, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mound City, in memory of Mr. Moses.
