Rupert Charles Meyer of Cape Girardeau was called to his heavenly home Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at the age of 88 at Chateau Girardeau Health Center.

He was born July 7, 1928 in Apple Creek, Missouri, the eighth of 11 children born to Hugo and Albertine Buchheit Meyer.

In 1947, Rupert graduated from St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Missouri, and later joined the Naval Reserve.

Rupert met Helen Virginia Schamburg while working as an assistant manager at the Kroger store in Perryville. On July 21, 1956, they were married at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Perryville. Shortly after, they moved to Bonne Terre, Missouri, where Rupert was a manager at Kroger.

In 1960, they moved to Cape Girardeau and Rupert went into the real-estate business with his brother. He joined the Cape Jaycees, and shortly after joined the Lions Club, serving as an officer and Pancake Day chairman. Rupert also was a member of the chamber of commerce and active with Cub Scout Pack 16.

He was named Salesman of the Year for the state of Missouri in 1964 and Salesman of the Year for Cape Girardeau County in 1973. He was the vice president of Meyer Realty. He also served as MLS president and was on its board of directors. Rupert was a past state associate director of the Missouri Association of Realtors. He retired after 55 years in real estate.

An active member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, he served a term on the parish council.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; three children, Becki (Tom) Essner of Cape Girardeau, Lisa (Harry) Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina, and John (Suzanne) Meyer of Dallas; grandchildren Josh (Jenny) Essner of Alexandria, Kentucky, Katie (Tommy) Garlock of Buffalo, New York, Mackenzie (fiance, Drew Steck) Smith of Indianapolis, Harry L. Smith III, Sam Smith, Ryan Smith, Lauren Smith and Luke Smith of Charlotte, Austin Meyer of Midland, Texas, and Liz Meyer and Jack Meyer of Dallas; and one great-grandchild, Charlie Essner of Alexandria.

Rupert also is survived by two brothers, Thomas L. Meyer of Cape Girardeau and Urban Meyer of Sarasota, Florida; three sisters, Theresa Meyer and Laverne Hinchey of St. Louis and Sister Frances Meyer of San Francisco.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Clete Meyer; and three sisters, Hedwig Meyer, Hildegard Meyer and Margaret Walker.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home, with parish prayers at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. David Hulshof officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Teen Challenge or a charity of your choice.
