CAIRO, Ill. -- Funeral service for Ruby Long of Cairo will be held at 11 a.m. today at Barkett Funeral Chapel here. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens at Villa Ridge.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9-11 a.m.
Long died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1992, in Chesterfield, Mo.
The daughter of Fred G. and Pearl Fahr, she graduated from Cairo High School in 1932. She attended Stephens College and Northwestern University at Evanston, received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois, and a master's degree from New York University.
She married Brooks Russell Long in 1942. He preceded her in death.
Long was a buyer and designer of home furnishings for Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago for 11 years. She was a teacher at Cairo High School 25 years, and was a member of the business faculty at Shawnee College.
She was a partner in Fahr's Gift Shop, and developed the fine china and crystal department.
Long was instrumental in the formation of Cairo Historical Association, serving as president four years. She worked with civic groups to acquire and preserve the Civil War mansion, which is now Magnolia Manor.
She was president of Cairo Woman's Club, served on the Cairo Planning Commission and aided in the development of the first zoning ordinance.
She was named Outstanding Business Teacher of the area by Shawnee College, and Woman of the Year by Cairo civic groups.
Survivors include a son, Brooks Long Jr. of Germantown, Tenn.; a daughter, Linda Goode of Chesterfield, and four grandchildren.
