Roy L. Schaefer, 80, of Snyder Village in Metamora, Ill., formerly of Washington, Ill., died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Snyder Village, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 28, 1929, in Scott City, to Lawrence and Matilda Schaefer. He and Agnes L. Blattel were married July 12, 1952, in Oran, Mo.

Survivors include his wife; six children, Carolyn Schaefer of Peoria, Ill., Roy (LuAnn) Schaefer Jr. of Florence, Ind., Bettina (Randall) Foster of Mapleton, Ill., Richard (Michelle) Schaefer of East Peoria, Ill., Anthony (Kristy) Schaefer of North Pekin, Ill., Paula (Anthony) Mooney of Hanna City, Ill.; two sisters, Rose Marie (C.A.) Baugus of Cape Girardeau, Dora Koehler of Jackson; six grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.

Roy was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS M.C. Fox from Feb. 20, 1948, to Feb. 15, 1952.

He was a truck driver, retiring from NE Finch in 1992. He also drove trucks for Texaco and was an independent truck driver.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union, St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, Knights of Columbus Fr. John Menco Council 6707 and the Spaulding Council in Peoria.

Roy was a respected member of the Northern Tazewell Fire Department in Washington for more than 21 years.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. A prayer service will be held at 6:45.

A funeral Mass for Roy will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph P. Donton officiating. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington, with military honors accorded by the U.S. Navy.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central Illinois Chapter; or to Northern Tazewell Fire Department.
