PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- James Roger Moore, known to his family as Roger, was born in Bedford, Ind., on Dec. 8, 1926, the son of Judge Roscoe D. and Mildred Moore. He died on Dec. 13, 2003, at the age of 77.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, and a sister, Ruth (Robert) Flentge. He was married to Nancy Bierk on May 22, 1949.
He retired as the superintendent of Citizen's Electric Corporation in Perryville and later worked as a journeyman electrician at Southeast Missouri State University, where he was honored by the board of regents for "sharing his knowledge of high voltage transformers, cables and switchgear, as well as motor control circuitry with his fellow employees ... and using his knowledge to maintain, repair and upgrade the university electrical system ... while being a driving force in the concern for, and practice of, safe working habits for both himself and his peers."
He was a World War II veteran serving in the Merchant Marines and a member of American Legion Post 133. He spent a lifetime of service to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as scoutmaster in the St. Louis Area Council and as a scoutmaster and Explorer leader in the Southeast Missouri Council Area. His outstanding record in scouting led to a nomination for the Kirkwood, Mo., Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the community.
He was a member of the Perryville Optimist Club, serving as its president; the Perryville Chamber of Commerce; the Masonic Lodge of St. Marys, Mo.; the Perry County Saddle Club and a charter member of the Perry County Historical Society. He served on the board of directors of the Perry County Memorial Hospital, Ann Patterson Nursing Home, Miners Lumber Co., Perryville Development Corporation and was a member and past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Perryville.
He is survived by his wife; four sons and their wives, Mark C. and Candie Moore of St. Louis, Kim R. and June Moore of Perryville, Chris D. and Julie Moore of Cape Girardeau and Jeff Moore of Perryville; six grandchildren, Megan Moore, Jennifer Zimmerman, Jessica Weiler, Abigail Petzoldt and her husband Tommy, Hannah Moore, Nathaniel Moore; and one great-granddaughter, Emma Jane.
A memorial service will be held at the Perryville First Presbyterian Church, 6 E. Ste. Maries St., Perryville, at 10 a.m. Friday. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers to the First Presbyterian Church of Perryville or the Perry County Saddle Club.
