Roger K. Hamm

KELSO, Mo. -- Roger Keith Hamm, 58, of Kelso died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, in Cape Girardeau County as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born Dec. 17, 1952, in Cape Girardeau, to William Avery and Dorothy Elizabeth Walter Hamm. Roger and Martha Jane Gaines were married Jan. 11, 1975, at Guardian Angel Church in Oran, Mo.

Roger is survived by his wife; three sons, William Robert (Dianna) Hamm of Cape Girardeau, Keith Joseph (Kelli) Hamm of Jackson, Brian Andrew Hamm of Kelso; a grandson, Karson Robert Hamm of Jackson; his mother of Commerce, Mo.; five brothers, William Douglas (Shelby) Hamm of Chaffee, Mo., Jack R. Hamm, Glen (Nancy) Hamm and Mark (Brenda) Hamm of Scott City, Bruce (Mary Anna) Hamm of Benton; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, and an infant son, John Wayne Hamm.

Roger worked in the bulk oil industry 39 years. He worked for Les Eagle/Standard Oil Co., Eagle Oil Co. and MFA Oil Co. Over the years Roger made many friends in the local area delivering fuel. Everybody knew him as the gas man with many jokes to tell. One thing he loved to do was show pictures of his grandson Karson to his customers and friends and brag that he is teaching him the "important things of life."

Roger is also well-known from his years coaching youth sports. He coached baseball 14 years (1987 to 2000) in the North Scott County area. He coached all three of his sons and many other players that he always thought of as his sons. He coached numerous all-star teams and also was past president of North Scott County Babe Ruth League. He participated in many activities with the former Scott City Optimist Club. He was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Kelso.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, with the Rev. Oliver Clavin as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Augustine School Foundation in Kelso or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
