Assistant chief of police Roger W. Fields, 50, of Jackson died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 13, 1963, in St. Louis, to Bill Wayne and Bonnie Jean Darden Fields. He and Marsha Ann Shaver were married May 21, 1988, in Cape Girardeau.

Roger was a graduate of Woodland High School in Marble Hill, Mo., and Southeast Missouri State University, with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He received a Certificate of Completion from Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command.

He started with the Cape Girardeau Police Department in April 1988 and was promoted to assistant chief Jan. 17, 2009.

Roger was a member of Connection Point Church in Jackson. He served on the Cape Girardeau County SALT Committee, SEMO Drug Task Force, Cape Girardeau and Bollinger County Major Case Squad, United Way and Jackson JAYF little league football.

He also was coordinator of the annual Law Enforcement Memorial, past board member of Safehouse for Women, member of Chamber of Commerce, Infectious Disease Taskforce through Cape Girardeau County Health Department and past member of the Community Caring Council board of directors.

Roger was an avid hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed bow fishing.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Bonnie Fields of Glenallen, Mo.; wife, Marsha Fields of Jackson; two sons, Blake Fields (fiancee Bethany Rouggly) of St. Charles, Mo., and Kyle Fields of Jackson; a brother, Rick Fields (Jane) of Glenallen; a sister, Karen Martin (Chuck) of Jackson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mel and Sharon Shaver of Arnold, Mo.; three nephews, Tim Fields of Jacksonville, Fla., Zachary and Seth Fields of Glenallen.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Jewell and Madeleine Darden and Charlie and Ruth Fields, all of Kennett, Mo.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Connection Point Church, 1506 South Farmington Road in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Dr. Chris Vaught, senior pastor, and the Rev. Kevin Mann, executive pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
