Robert King

Robert F. King, 71, of Cape Girardeau, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born June 6, 1933, in Carlisle, Ark., son of Irvy Robert and Sarah Edna Kerr King. He and Carolyn Carter were married May 6, 1957, in Greenville, Miss.

Mr. King was a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas and received a master's degree from the university in 1962. He did graduate work at the University of Arkansas and Southeast Missouri State University.

He taught and coached all sports in Arkansas, moved to Perryville, Mo., in 1961 and taught and coached there until moving to Cape Girardeau in 1968. He taught and coached football and track at Central High School until 1973, and then served as assistant principal at Central from 1973 until retiring in 1992.

Mr. King was a member of Cape County Sheriff's Patrol from 1974 to 1988. He was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church, Salvation Army Advisory Board and Girl Scout Board.

Survivors include his wife; a son, R. Bruce King of Jackson; two daughters, Karen Kuntze of Jackson, Gina "Liz" Smies of Pocahontas; a brother, J. Samuel King of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Ferol Coats and Patsy Kittler of Carlisle; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Dr. Derek Staples officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lynwood Baptist Church, Salvation Army or Cape County Friends of Law Enforcement Fund at Southeast Missouri State University.
