CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Robert Lee "Bob" Griggs, 74, of Mesquite, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Mesquite Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1926, in the Rush Ridge community of Mississippi County, son of Lee and Jettie Brown Griggs. He and Jean Thompson were married in 1946. She died in 1970. He and Rose Burger were married March 8, 1989...

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Robert Lee "Bob" Griggs, 74, of Mesquite, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Mesquite Medical Center.

He was born July 31, 1926, in the Rush Ridge community of Mississippi County, son of Lee and Jettie Brown Griggs. He and Jean Thompson were married in 1946. She died in 1970. He and Rose Burger were married March 8, 1989.

Griggs retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant, returned to Mississippi County and was manager of Delta Growers Fertilizer Plant at Charleston until retiring.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cairo, Ill., VFW Post 4294 in Charleston and VFW Post 6796 in Dallas, Texas. He had lived in Mesquite since 1988.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Griggs of St. Charles, Mo., Robbie Griggs of St. Louis; a daughter, Sandy Bryant of Charleston; a stepson, Thomas Melton of Aurora, Colo.; five brothers, Douglas Griggs of Chicago, Nathan Griggs of Brawley, Calif., Morris, Richard and Sam Griggs, all of Charleston; three sisters, Virginia Moss of Charleston, Irma Crecelius of Tucson, Ariz., Earlene Manor of Rogers, Ark.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston from 5-8 p.m. Monday.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Larry Potts will officiate, with Robbie Griggs to give the eulogy. Burial will be in Smith-Griggs Cemetery near Wyatt, Mo., with military rites by Missouri Military Honors Program.
