Robert D. Bonney, 82, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at his home in Jackson. He was born Dec. 25, 1929, in Cape Girardeau, to Duree V. and Grace V. Minton Bonney.
Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 23, 1948, at Fort Knox, Ky. His career spanned 21 years and included two tours during the Korean War when he was an M-1 Tank Commander with the Armored Calvary. His medals include the Bronze Star with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and Letter V Device; Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Award (4th Award); Presidential Unit Citation with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star; Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and a Silver Star; Combat Infantry Badge (1st Award); and United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged July 31, 1969.
After his Army retirement, his family returned to Jackson. Robert briefly worked for A & P, and then worked Pocahontas Meats for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Loving survivors include three children, Leslie (Pete) McHughs of Thebes, Ill., Robert J. "Bob" (Kim) Bonney, and Bill Bonney all of Jackson; his special friend, Mary Terry of Jackson; a sister, Marilyn (Jackie) Griner of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Cory (Becky) McHughs of Ocean Springs, Miss., Shannon (Heather) McHughs of Jackson, April (Rod) Styer of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Baylie Bonney of Jackson, Jaime (Sam) Marshall of Jefferson City, Mo., Conrad, Samuel, Henry and Frank Bonney all of Jackson.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Bonney; his father, Duree Bonney; his mother, Grace Shaner; and step-father, Howard Shaner.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating. Interment and full military honors will be at McLain Chapel Cemetery at Oriole.
