SIKESTON - Richard George "Dick" Whiffen, 65 of Matthews, died Friday April, 23, 1993 at his home. He was born Jan. 19, 1928 in Kewanee, Ill., the son of Charles F. and Grayce Johnson Whiffen.
On Aug. 2, 1952 he married Shirley Douglas, who survives.
He was a farmer and also worked in the excavation business. He was a member of the Hunter Memorial First Presbyterian Church in Sikeston, a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea, and a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in agriculture.
In 1975 he was named the Outstanding Farmer for New Madrid County, and was recognized many times for his ability as a farmer. He served on the University of Missouri Extension board, the 4-H Camp board, was a project leader in 4-H, was active in Farm Bureau and the National Farm Organization, and was presently serving on the R.E.A. board.
Surviving besides his wife are: two sons, Richard Douglas Whiffen of Sikeston, and Bradley Scott Whiffen of Matthews; two daughters, Cheryle Wolford and Charlene Whiffen, both of Matthews; one brother, Charles Faye Whiffen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. The funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Rev. Ken Jarvis officiating.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee, Ill.
