PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Rev. Louis Joseph Derbes, CM, 86, of Perryville died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Apostle of Charity Residence on the campus of St. Mary's of the Barrens in Perryville.

He was born in New Orleans on Jan. 21, 1924, son of the late Charles J. and Carmen Marie Louise Antonini Derbes.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Thorpe of Pinhurst, N.C., Beverly Landrieu of Metairie, La.; two brothers, Charles J. Derbes Jr. and Dr. Lawrence Derbes, DDS, of Metairie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Rosemary Withers, Myrtle Walsh, Elisemary Walsh, Eleanor Bennison, Carmen Derbes; and two brothers, John and J. Roy Derbes.

Derbes was a member of the Congregation of the Mission. He professed vows at St. Mary's of the Barrens on May 31, 1945. He was ordained a priest at St. Mary's on May 20, 1951.

He served St. Francis in Bethany, Okla., from 1951 to 1955; St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Perryville from 1955 to 1960; DePaul Academy in Chicago from 1960 to 1962; St. John's Seminary in San Antonio from 1962 to 1966; Regina Cleri Seminary in Tucson, Ariz., from 1966 to 1975; St. Vincent College in Cape Girardeau from 1975 to 1979; St. Louis Prep Seminary from 1979 to 1982; DePaul Vincentian Residence in Chicago from 1982 to 1989; and St. Mary's of the Barrens from 1989 to the present.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until after prayer service at 7:30 today at Mary Mother of God Chapel at the Apostle of Charity Residence. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Mark S. Pranaitis, CM, officiating. Burial will be in the Vincentian Community Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to Congregation of the Mission.

Young and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
